Over the course of a career an endoscopist may perform more than 10,000 colonoscopies and EGDs. Each of these procedures puts tremendous strain on the endoscopist’s hands and wrists often resulting in long term discomfort and injuries. Occupational injuries among endoscopists are surprisingly common. In a 2006 study by Keate et al, (GIE 2006:63:AB 111), 43% of respondents reported some form of hand or carpal tunnel injury. Applying torque to the scope was responsible for 29% of the complaints. A more recent study by Shergill et al.(GIE 2007:65:AB 315), concluded that repeated, high thumb pinch forces can lead to DeQuervain's tendinitis and carpal tunnel syndrome. Designers at Syntheon set out to create a device that could reduce these occupational injuries and hopefully aid endoscopists in performing more thorough endoscopic procedures. EndoLok™ is an ergonomic endoscope grip designed to reduce the amount of force required by the endoscopist to grip and rotate the endoscope during a procedure. EndoLok's™ ergonomic design allows it to be held comfortably in various positions. It's large diameter grip provides better mechanical advantage for a smoother more controlled manipulation of the scope. More controlled movement of the scope during pull back can improve visibility of the mucosal layer and may increase adenoma detection. |
